A Tribute to Dad

In June of 1989 my dad and I went on a fishing trip together to Tenakee Springs Alaska. This week my dad would have turned 82. This trip is just one of the many great memories I have to remember my dad. He was a good dad and a wonderful grandfather to our children. Happy Birthday Dad. This is for you.

As we flew into Juneau Alaska, we saw the Mendenhall Glacier and later we went and visited as viewed in the following pictures.

The ice from the glacier was very clear when you take it out of the water.

From Juneau we flew by float plain to Tenakee Springs. We had to spend the night in Juneau because of the weather, so we left the next morning. We spend the night with some friends who showed us around the area.

This the the view of Tenakee Springs as we were landing.
The town is on a large island called Chichagof Island and the town is a single road along the shore with homes primarily along the beach. There were some new homes and older cabins and there was a brand new school. There were no vehicles as the one lane road was only about a mile and a half.

The hotel we stayed included the fishing trip and all meals.

As we landed at the end of this long dock the skipper met us and picked up our luggage.

All luggage on the cart was then hauled to the hotel.

One lane no cars only carts and bikes.

The busiest we saw this road was one afternoon a Pizza Hut boat arrived at the dock and the boys in the town road up and road knocking on doors taking orders for pizza and then later folks walked down the the boat to pick them up.

This was the reason the town was called "springs" inside this building was a hot spring. There were  hours posted for visiting the hot springs. Hours for men and women. During the day you could see people going down to take their daily bath at the hot springs.

The view from our hotel was beautiful as seen by this picture and the following.

This is our fishing partners for the week. The skipper is front middle and dad is upper right, notice the big smile. He loved fishing.

The name of our boat was the Hiawatha.

Dad caught one, maybe it's the 49 pounder.

A beautiful place to fish.

Pulling a Halibut.

Pretty good catch today.

The skipper pulled in a halibut and put it on the grill. It was awesome, you can't get it any fresher than that.

The really big ones had to be shot, before we could bring in on board.

Look at that meat! We all brought home over 65 pounds of filet's each.

A view of the town.

A whale of a tale.

Look closely you may see the grizzly.

Another view of the grizzly - you don't want to get to close.

Alaska State Ferry

We say this whale breach and it sounded like a cannon when it hit the water.

This is the lowest we saw the sun go. It never got dark.

Thanks Dad for the great memories!

That Alaskan fishing trip was a dream of his. I'm so glad he did it and invited you to join. Those fillets were enjoyed for months.
